Ambassador Alfonso Silva took Chile's economic agenda to Shanghai
Chile’s ambassador to China, Alfonso Silva, made a working visit to Shanghai to strengthen ties with local authorities and with the business community of one of the country’s main economic and financial centres. The agenda was built around three meetings, all with the same focus: the Chilean presence in the city.
The first was with Chilean business people based in Shanghai, held at the premises of the Consular Corps Club. They exchanged views on the opportunities and challenges facing the Chilean private sector in the Chinese market, and the Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national companies operating in the country.
The second was with representatives of the Shanghai Federation of Industry and Commerce, where the talks covered ways to deepen economic cooperation and open new channels of exchange between the local business community and Chile.
The third took the ambassador to the Foreign Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. Both sides reviewed the state of relations between Chile and the city and exchanged views on initiatives to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
The distinction matters: Shanghai is not a ceremonial stop but the place where a good part of Chile’s trade with China is decided. Work with the municipal government and the business federation is what usually precedes the announcements later signed in Beijing.
